Did you know that C.J. John Marshall, who served from 1801-35, earned only $68,596 in 2006 dollars?

The highest adjusted-averag salary ever belongs to C.J. Charles Evans Hughes, who served from 1930-41, and was paid $291,664 in 2006 dollars.

Current C.J. Roberts earns $212,188, which is slightly less than the adjusted $215,467 the late C.J. Rehnquist made. In fact, while C.J. Roberts’ salary is in the top ten adjusted salaries of all Chief Justices since 1800, it is nevertheless the lowest of those ten.
